Camping Bagatelle

View 980 reviews
This very modest campsite with youth hostel and restaurant lies directly opposite the old centre of Avignon. From the terrace you have a view of the Palais des Papes, the largest Gothic building from the Middle Ages in Europe. The campsite lies directly on the Rhône, near the famous bridge over the river. You cannot camp any closer to the city, it is only a ten minute walk to the centre. Camping Bagatelle (open throughout the year) is convenient for a short stay only. For instance, as an overnight stop or to visit Avignon.

The restaurant offers decent food at a reasonable price. Nice wine by the bottle, I recommend the 4 generations from Orange. Great location. Power cuts are frequent, so you have to keep re-setting the power cable. Lights go off in the showers whilst you are in there. I slipped twice as I came out of the shower, as it was dark, I didn’t see the step outside the shower in the dark. Power 6 amp, unable to boil a kettle. Some staff at reception lovely, some miserable and unhelpful.
More ampage. Lights in showers that stay on. All staff being civil rather than snotty. I asked why we had no power and the member of staff just shrugged and looked disinterested. 6 amps is not enough to boil a kettle.

This was a real find. The cafe/restaurant was amazing and we ate there both nights of our stay. The people there were so friendly and helpful, providing an extension and adapters when ours turned out to be broken. Our site was right in front of the river and we found it so relaxing watching the water flow by. We'd definitely stay here again!
It had been very wet and it was a bit muddy, but what can you expect in December!
