Campsites by the sea in the Netherlands

Camping by the sea has a special charm. For many campers, it’s the perfect way to unwind completely. The great thing is, you don’t have to drive far at all for a seaside campsite. In the Netherlands, you’ll find dozens of top campsites along the North Sea. Most of them are in Zeeland, but there are also campsites in South Holland, North Holland, and Friesland where you can step right onto the beach.

Why Choose the Sea?

A seaside campsite is always a good choice. With expansive sandy beaches, charming coastal towns, and lovely campsites, the Dutch coast has it all. From early morning beach walks to watersports fun, camping by the sea is an experience you won’t forget in a hurry. And in the Netherlands, it's all just a few hours’ drive from home.

Choosing Your Campsite

Wondering what to look for when booking a campsite? Before pitching your tent in the sand, it’s smart to check a few things. Not all campsites are the same, so find one that suits you. Are you after a lively family campsite, or do you prefer peace and space?

Which facilities are a must? Think about a campsite shop, a restaurant or snack bar, or a swimming pool. And of course: where would you like to go? With 450 kilometres of coastline, there are plenty of destinations to choose from:

Zeeland: Popular for Generations

Zeeland is known for its wide beaches and cosy coastal towns. A day in Middelburg or Vlissingen is highly recommended, with plenty to do for young and old. From the Zeeuws Museum to a harbour boat trip, Zeeland is incredibly diverse. After a day out, it’s lovely to come back to your campsite, with the sea just a short stroll away.

South Holland: From the Dunes to The Hague

South Holland has beautiful spots for seaside camping. The coastal towns of Noordwijk, Katwijk, and Scheveningen are ideal for a relaxing holiday. You can easily spend days here among the dunes. There are also fun excursions to places like Madurodam or Keukenhof. And how about a visit to Rotterdam?

North Holland: Enjoying Peace and Nature

In North Holland, you’ll find beautiful campsites by the sea, especially around Zandvoort and Callantsoog. The beaches are quieter here, and the natural surroundings make it a great place if you love walking or cycling. A bike ride through the flower fields is particularly recommended, especially in spring. Choosing a campsite in North Holland means choosing relaxation in nature. Or head into the lively cities of Amsterdam, Alkmaar, or Haarlem!

Friesland: Camping by the IJsselmeer

In Friesland, you can pick from campsites not only on the North Sea coast but also by the IJsselmeer. The calm beaches here are perfect for families with young children, as the water is shallow with fewer waves. Friesland also has lovely villages and nature areas worth exploring. A day in Hindeloopen is highly recommended, where you can wander along historic canals. Or hire a boat and explore the Frisian lakes!

Swimming is Always an Option

The biggest advantage of a seaside campsite? You’re always just a short stroll from a swim. Is the sea too chilly? Many campsites also have a swimming pool on-site, sometimes even heated and covered. So if you don’t want your swimming fun spoiled by the weather, book a campsite with an indoor pool.

Everything Tastes Better by the Sea

What’s a camping holiday without some great food? Fire up the barbecue next to your caravan, camper, or rented accommodation, or order a pot of mussels at a beach cafe. Many campsites also have their own restaurant, snack bar, or pizzeria for those days when you’d rather not cook. And don’t miss the highlight: grabbing an ice cream after a sunny day to wrap up your time at the beach. That’s what holidays are all about!
